One for the Books

The weirdest outcome thus far of the fact that I took on a new years resolution of reigniting my love of writing is that I’ve fallen in love with YouTube. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always enjoyed an occasional YouTube video, but I have never actively sought out YouTube content or considered it one of my primary forms of entertainment. No more. It’s plain to me now why YouTube is the #2 most popular website on the internet (Google being #1). I have learned so much from watching YouTube videos since January. I took an entire creative writing class. There’s SO MUCH content to enjoy, on every conceivable topic imaginable.

Unsurprisingly, my primary YouTube content consumption of the last few months have been channels about reading, writing, and books. And there is a crazy amount of great channels out there with that focus. But I have noticed a niche that isn’t quite filled. Now, there are a ton of podcasts that fill the niche I’m talking about, but podcasts don’t capture my interest the same way. I feel way more connected to the YouTubers I follow than the podcasters I listen to. I feel like our parasocial relationship is stronger, and I love the flexibility of video not just for connection but to really showcase more than just the person (or people) doing the talking. A picture is worth a thousand words, after all. And after two plus years of pandemic isolation, I love the idea of seeing people’s faces, even if it’s through a screen.

I’m sure you can see where this is heading. I’m starting my own YouTube channel. Essentially, I’m going to attempt to run a show about all things bookish, where I interview folks from across the spectrum of the literary world, including authors, poets, publishers, editors, librarians, readers, agents, influencers, editors, businesses and nonprofits, illustrators, cover designers, and more! I’ve waited to make this announcement for a quite a while, because I wanted to be able to pretty quickly follow up on it with content. And I’m very happy to say that my pilot episode is launching today!

The name of my channel is One for the Books. I can’t wait to to see where this goes. Watch the first episode here!
