Give Me Freedom And Give Me Death

Prompt: Ripped From the Headlines

The flood of patients fills every room
As omicron, no longer distant, looms
They fill the waiting areas and halls
And doctors rush to meet the calls

A tired nurse tries to catch her breath
But all around her, she’s met with death
She just wants to make it home tonight
And squeeze her loved ones extra tight

Another flatline in the ICU
There’s nothing now that they can do
The workers turn away and sigh
As the families and loved ones cry

Everywhere you look, hearts ache
Surely there must be some mistake
How could this be happening here?
How come we aren’t all in the clear?

The vaccines work, the masks are good
If only these poor souls understood
They think freedom means no rules
But death is undeterred and cruel
